On Friday I attended a vodka and energy drink tasting by Tonino Lamborghini----a brand created by the son of Mr. Lamborghini---to celebrate its UK debut. Everything about the event gave me flashbacks of my Mayfair clubbing days of 2011-2013; the event was held at The Westbury, an after-Maddox (or even mid-Maddox, if you know what I mean) favourite, our driver drove through the same little streets of Mayfair that my kin and I often stomped en route to The Scotch, Le Baron, Salon etc., and of course vodka and energy drinks is a staple at every nightclub table. I've tasted them all; Ciroc, Belvedere, Absolut, Grey Goose and I'll never get used to nor enjoy the unpleasant flavour and burning sensation. I'm not a vodka girl! I'm the one demanding that the promoters or proprietors of the establishment fetch me a flute of champagne or scotch on the rocks instead. To say nothing of my opinion on energy drinks, I associate the sickly sweet smell of it of being drenched in decadence and not the good kind. So it was with a very, very, open mind that I let Tonino Lamborghini send a driver to pick Henry and I up for a tasting session of Tonino Lamborghini's new premium vodka and energy drink at The Westbury Mayfair.
"Tonino Lamborghini Vodka is presented in a shaft of sheer elegance that evokes effortless style. The transparency of the bottle is offset by a jet dusting that enhances its unique prism design and emboldens the “Raging Bull” insignia, executed in epoxy chrome to give it a silver-plated effect.
Tonino Lamborghini Vodka is produced by selecting only the highest quality cereals from farms in Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans and Slovakia, renowned for the superiority of their grain.
A triple distillation extracts the very best qualities of the grain, ensuring the right balance between the pure and the smooth. The distillate is then carefully filtered several times through birch activated carbon filters and quartz fine sand, resulting in a clean, crystalline alcohol. Finally the alcohol content is reduced from the degree of distillation to the degree of commercialisation (40% Vol) by adding water of the highest purity from the Alpine springs of Francia corta.
The water used in the process of dilution flows directly from pristine Italian springs at the foot of the Rhaetian Alps in the stunning valley of Franciacorta, famous for its excellent wines. Filtered through underground passages between the rocks of the mountains above Lake Iseo, it flows pure and clear. The springs of Franciacorta are characterised by their reduced mineral content which gives the vodka an extraordinary balance.
This pure, sophisticated and smooth spirit brims with the taste of Pure Italian Talent."
My verdict? A velvety-smooth, crystalline, clean-tasting vodka with a distinct mineral water flavour, you could actually taste the Alps. Tonino Lamborghini vodka was extremely easy to drink neat and went down effortlessly, and this is coming from someone who can't stomach vodka even with a mixer. Like a good scotch best enjoyed neat or with a drop of water, Tonino Lamborghini vodka is definitely a premium drink for the discerning and is certainly well positioned, with exclusive distribution to a choice of some of the world's most fashionable clubs, bars, and nightspots. Throughout the tasting I absentmindedly sipped the energy drink, like I would with water, without realising I was drinking something I usually can't stand the smell let alone taste of. Both Tonino Lamborghini vodka and energy drink tasted subtle and went down easily, but had all the impact of vodka at 40% proof and like any other energy drink had me buzzing for a good hour. Should I find myself in a Mayfair nightclub anytime soon I'll definitely be asking for Tonino Lamborghini vodka, it's the only vodka I've tasted that I actually enjoy! In the meantime I think I'll be ordering it as presents for my racing enthusiast and motor head friends.
