Debunking the 'Never meet your heroes' myth.

You know how it is said that you should never meet your heroes in person because it will only bring disappointment? I've proven that wrong.

Yesterday I met Joe Sacco!*implodes with joy*

I was at Comica to hear Joe Sacco (acclaimed journalist and comic artists of Palestine, The Fixer, Footnotes in Gaza, Journalism etc.) in conversation with Pat Mills, to check out his new work The Great War (a 24 foot accordion of a panorama depicting the first day of the Battle Of The Somme) and brought my books along hoping to have them signed.

Boom. Boom. BOOM.

The conversation between Joe Sacco and Pat Mills was an insightful discussion about history, politics, conflict, how leadership is self-selected, the disease and weakness of the human species, and thought-provoking especially the comparison between sociopaths and leaders.

Mr. Sacco---"Call me Joe"---was ever so courteous and pleased to hear about what I had to say about his work. I feel like his journalistic comics give a human face to all the suffering in war and conflict. We are bombarded daily with so much horrible stories in the news that one tends to be desensitised to it, numb even, and after a while you see casualties as numbers and not people. But his comics give voices to the people who otherwise go unheard and makes one empathise with those whose troubles that seem like a whole world away. He said that the title character in his book 'The Fixer' used the book as proof of his need for asylum (which he did gain) and even get him relative luxuries that he may have been denied. Do you still doubt the power of comics?

I told Joe that I'm inspired by his narrative and try to apply some of it in my comic series 'Audaciously Yours'. He asked for my website so that he could have a look at my work. *implodes again*

In other news---

1) I've posted Audacious Threads Week 2 on the Audaciously Yours website to show what my comic counterpart wore in Audaciously Yours: Week 2: Follow, Stalk, Avoid.

2) I've changed the blog background to a snippet from the upcoming Audaciously Yours Week 3. It'll be published in The Heat, centrespread of Heat+ (lifestyle section) first week of November! I can't wait, I'm so proud of it, I think I outdid myself this time. Now I'll have to outdo myself with Week 4. My goal is to keep outdoing myself and moving up, up, and up.

3) I've updated my Lust List on my blog to reflect my autumn shopping list. It's a palette of burgundy, navy, red, browns, and khaki. I need to get my hands on everything before my next trip to the country. Go and shop, everything you buy earns me commission! *rubs hands together gleefully like a fly*

4) Mexico (Nick) threw a 'Gin and Sin' birthday brunch yesterday and of course there were fire-eating dancers. Of course. And of course Jessica Patterson has a Justin Bieber wallet. Of course.

5) The Malaysia Tatler ball was happening yesterday and I was so sad to miss out. My Instagram feed was being FLOODED by friends and family partying up a storm without ME. Why ya'll do me like dat?! F-O-M-O!!!!
